THIS YEAR OUR SHOW IS BOTH VIRTUAL AND AVAILABLE TO VIEW IN PERSON AT THE RICE MUSEUM AND GALLERY IN GEORGETOWN, S.C.
Our Judge, Russell Jewell judged the show virtually and made the following comments:
BEST OF SHOW: Ready to Kayak by Lora Jones, seemed to address the entire format of the composition with an eye for abstraction and a strong use of color. There is a feel for the value of light and shade that happens within the intense color of the boats.
FIRST PLACE - PROFESSIONAL: The Light Within, by Tina Proctor, showed a personal touch with color mixing and atmospheric lighting with a strong sense of architectural rendering.
SECOND PLACE - PROFESSIONAL: Mom's Porch, by Johnnie Cowan, created a believable sense of place with the use of depth and space. The title and personal subject matter lend themselves to the overall success of the work.
THIRD PLACE - PROFESSIONAL: Teamwork, by Dan Kraus, is a very strong image and believably rendered and I would encourage the artist to push the development of the negative space so that it supports the strength of the focal point.
FIRST PLACE - NON PROFESSIONAL: Last of the Season, by Sharon Bogan, is a great composition and has good use of the entire page. It is time to move into the realm of professionals!
SECOND PLACE - NON PROFESSIONAL: Mainmast, by Brian Zell and THIRD PLACE - NON PROFESSIONAL: Painting Buddy, by Mary Spechko, round out the top three in the nonprofessionals and I like these artists exploration of still life as a viable subject matter. We all have to remind ourselves to paint the light regardless of the subject. Congratulations to all. Keep those brushes wet!
Judge Jewell also noted Honorable Mentions as: Bull Red by Victoria Alger, Pride and Prejudice by Janice Coward, Two Dollar Star by Marsha Orr, and McAfee Knobb, VA by Mary Schneider.
